Odour mitigation at the washrooms

The COVID Pandemic has woken the world up when it comes to Personal and Public Hygiene. Rapid urbanisation & ease of medical treatment had led people to presume and believe that cures to all illnesses are just a small pill away and hence led to lowered standards for following personal hygiene. The Corporate sector does not really benefit directly from the expertise of WHO when it comes to public health while facing issues even more complex than the Public Health authorities.

At Hygienetech, we started working on providing solutions for Corporate Public Health and realised the gravity of the challenges. Having zeroed in on the Washrooms as one of the weakest links for Hygiene at the workplace, we started working with a lot of facility heads as long back as 2017. During our interactions with various facility heads, we realised that the challenges faced by them were not only pertaining to the unseen science of health security/hygiene but also to providing a refreshing experience to staff and guests alike. It was during these days we encountered the issues of foul odour in the washroom. Like almost every other organization providing services to the corporates – we tried to resolve this by connecting with premium air freshener suppliers – only to learn that the very premise of countering foul odour with a fragrance was wrongly based on science.

A lot of enzyme-based products, urinal screens etc had started hitting the market – by this time we had realised the difference between resolving the issue and masking an odour. To be able to come up with the most comprehensive and authoritative solutions for this issue of foul odour – we started digging deeper into the chemistry of the gases that actually caused the foul odour, the origins, the persistence in air, relation with organic matter in the washroom and connect this with the risk of cross-contamination at the washrooms.

We had been constantly building the tools in the background as one factor after another kept becoming clear, and eventually, we were able to realize that all washrooms are different and there is no single solution to resolve all odour/hygiene issues. This took us back to the drawing board – it was quite difficult and impractical to connect with the facility head to throw the science of odour without a firm solution. This led the Hygienetech team to work towards a dual approach – to (1) First analyse the cause of the odour and the risk of health security, and (2) Then offer a comprehensive plan for sustainable odour control & enhanced hygiene security with minimal costs.

In July 2022, almost after 48 months of working on the issue; The Hygienetech team finally came up with both of these. The Hygiecheck™ test is a comprehensive test to check the health of the washroom, the constituents of odour, safety to health beyond a visual inspection, and risk of cross-contamination. This is backed by designing a tailor-made washroom hygiene plan with minimal cost to the establishment, and which is sustainable without human intervention.

The Hygiecheck™ provides numerous benefits to the Facility Manager by identifying the exact cause of the problem and helps resolve the same at fraction of the cost incurred otherwise.
